Military Life

Our Story:

When I met Matt, he was a senior (I was a junior) in high school and already in the Marine Corp’s Delayed Entry Program. Three days after he graduated he left for Parris Island. He went to MOS school afterwards to become a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. After that, he left for Okinawa, Japan for two years. During that time, we broke up but right before he came home, we had gotten back together. He had ten days of leave and on December 28, 2005 we got married by a Justice of the Peace.

Matt left for 29 Palms, CA where he was going to be deployed from. About a day after he got there, he called and asked me when I was coming out there. A week later I quit my job, packed my car with everything I owned and drove from Ohio to California with my Pomeranian, Elvis. About a month later I watched Matt leave on a bus and I was all alone. I was born in California and had lived there most of my life so that part didn’t bother me, but I was still nervous about living on a Marine base and I knew nobody.

Then one day before I was going to fly home and visit my family, my neighbor ambushed me and invited me to go to a party. From that day forward, Jenni has been my best friend. We live on opposite sides of the country now but I’m hoping that eventually changes! Anyways, Hubby finally came home and that day is one of the best in my life.

Matt’s EAS was June 2007 and in May of that year he started his terminal leave. We drove back home to Ohio and I went back to my old job. Matt was unemployed and had a hard time finding a job. In February of 2008 he decided to re-enlist as a Reservist and he changed his MOS to a Multi-Channel Radio Operator.

In August of 2008 we found out we were pregnant with Riley. Because of our situation, we decided it was best if Matt deployed again, even if it meant he would have to leave us both. Riley was born in April 2009 and six weeks later, Matt left to start training for his second deployment. He had ten days leave before he left in October and he finally returned in February 2010.

For five months after Matt came home from his second deployment he was still working away during the week at the Reserve unit and only coming home on weekends. When he finally moved in, we went through an adjustment period. Then in June of 2011, Matt re-enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves. We may or may not have another deployment coming up but waiting isn’t something new to this Marine wife!
